In this article, we offer insights into the plurality of interest groups’ strategic responses to socially, politically, and economically transformative phenomenon democratic backsliding. For purpose term “ideational plurality” has been coined refer a ideas leading their activities in general choice strategies concerning government particular (attitudinal behavioural aspects). Two policy fields two types groups engaged an institutionalised social partnership—advocacy NGOs (operating environmental field) economic (trade unions)—are studied comparatively Slovenia using mixed?methods approach. The key findings are that backsliding vary between trade unions, as do ideational plurality, NGOs’ damages potential struggle against contrast, unions’ homogeneity enables them jointly governmental destruction one significant segment order (institutions partnership) without demanding step down for misusing Covid?19 pandemic establish system governance resonates with Viktor Orbán’s illiberal democracy.
